Nottinghamshire General Practice and Primary Care - United Against Racism

08 August 2024

The NHS is one of the most diverse and multi-ethnic organisations in the world and is something we are extremely proud of. Its strengths lie in its diversity and the healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to provide care and support to our communities.

We are appalled by the recent far-right racist and Islamophobic protests and riots which have understandably raised significant concerns within our general practice community. We strongly condemn any actions that seek to divide or discriminate.

NHS staff should be able to come to work without fear of violence, abuse or harassment from patients or their relatives. The psychological impact that such protests can have on our workforce and the potential for increased anxiety and stress must be acknowledged.

We urge the government to take a firm stance against abuse or violence against NHS staff and ensure that appropriate measures are in place to protect NHS staff from harassment and intimidation.

There is no place for aggression, abuse, incivility, or any acts of violence in our society. You are not alone. We are here for you, and stand in unwavering solidarity with general practice and our wider NHS workforce.
